dsc_0004Spencer Brayton is Director of Lumpkin Learning Commons and Head Librarian, Blackburn College, Carlinville, IL. He has been a member of CLS for 2 years.

What are you reading or listening to today?
I am currently reading “A New Culture of Learning” by Douglas Thomas and John Seely Brown. I am listening to Today in Digital Education (TIDE) podcast with Doug Belshaw and Dai Barnes.

What’s the best part of your work day?
Aside from supporting students, faculty and staff each day, I enjoy seeing how hard my student staff in the Learning Commons work. They provide great customer service and research support for the college and I am proud to observe this everyday.

What are you most excited about right now (library-related or otherwise)?
I am most excited about our ability to collaborate and teach from a critical pedagogy perspective. Both have allowed me to work with faculty and teach in new ways that are exciting. I have been able to revise a media and information literacy course and co-teach the class with a colleague and faculty member in communications, Natasha Casey. I am also excited about the emphasis on space design, which is crucial to developing new learning environments and promoting digital literacy.

How has your membership in CLS helped you?
It keeps me connected with colleagues across the country who share there important work in support of their fellow librarians. I believe it’s important to be open and share our work to promote knowledge, for the better of the profession and to learn from each other.
